Math 115A, Lecture 5, Fall 2010
- Mon Dec 27 2010:

Since a few people have asked, here are the ranges that I used for final course
grades:
- 86.9 - 100.0: A
- 73.8 - 82.6: B
- 54.6 - 67.9: C
- 29.0 - 47.4: D
- 00.0 - 23.0: F
As you can see, there were large gaps between the upper end of one grade and
the lower end of the next higher grade. This is why I chose to place the
cut-offs where I did. (I also assigned a few + and - grades to students who
were at the high or low end of their grade range by a noticeable margin.) This
means that, for example, if you got a B+, then you weren't really close to an
A- at all. So there's probably no point in asking me for a grade change, unless
you think that there was some mistake in the grading, for example of one of
your exams.

The final exam and my
solutions to it are now posted.
The exam grades, along with your final course grades, should be available on
my.ucla soon. Have a great holiday break!

I will hold a review session for the final exam on Wednesday,
Dec 8, starting at 6:00 PM, in MS 5147. I have the room reserved for a few
hours, so I'll try to stay as long as people have questions. And that means if
you can't show up at 6:00, you're welcome to show up any time later.
My office hours this week will be on Wednesday and Thursday
afternoons from 2:00 to 3:30. Let me know if you really want to talk to me and
can't make it at either of those times, and maybe we can set something up.
Homework #10 is due on Wednesday, at the review session, or
any time before that. If you're planning on coming to the review session, you
can just turn it in to me there. Or if you prefer, you can turn it in to me at
my office any time before that.
The final exam will be on Friday, Dec 10, from 8:00 to 11:00
AM, in Geology 3656.
Good luck with all of your finals this week!

Some of you have asked for copies of old tests I've given for Math 115A. In
case you couldn't find them elsewhere on my web site, here are the
midterm and
final exam that I gave in
summer session C.
- Wed Nov 10 2010:

I will hold office hours tomorrow (Thursday, November 11) at the usual time,
4:00 - 5:00, despite the holiday.
As promised, I will also hold a review session for Monday's midterm on Friday,
from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, in Boelter 5249. Feel free to show up for any or all of
that time.
Finally, I have also reserved a larger room for the midterm. The midterm will
be in PAB 1434A (that's the Physics and
Astronomy Building). If you don't know where that is, try to find it early so
you don't get lost!
- Wed Nov 3 2010:
-
For homework #6, you do not need to do problems 9 and 10 from Section 2.4. I
will write up problems for next week that cover the same ideas, but hopefully
in a more logical manner! This change has already been updated on the
assignments page.

You can now download midterm 1 and my
solutions to it. Guy and I will
grade the midterms over the next few days, so you should expect to get them
back on Wednesday or Thursday at the latest. The grades will also be posted on
my.ucla as soon as we are finished.
- Thu Oct 14 2010:

Midterm 1 will be next Monday, Oct 18, during class. I will hold a review
session for Midterm 1 tomorrow, Fri Oct 15, from 4:00 until around 6:00 in MS
6229. If you can't show up at 4:00, feel free to show up later. I plan to give
a review of the most important concepts/theorems that we have covered so far,
and also to solve some problems for you and answer any questions that you might
have.
- Wed Sep 29 2010:
-
I'm afraid I must cancel my office hours tomorrow (Thursday, 9/30). In place of
those, I will hold office hours on Friday from noon to 1:00.

Here are the syllabus and
course outline that I handed out in class
today. Also, as promised, I have posted part of the “supplementary
material” from the back of the book, for those of you who don't have the
UCLA special edition. You can download all of
Chapter 2 of this
supplement, or just the
exercises.
