18.05 Introduction to Probability and Statistics

Hogg and Tanis, Probability and Statistical Inference, 6th edition, Prentice Hall
(should be available in Quantum Books)

Additional reading will be handed out in class if necessary.

Grading: Home Assignments 20%, Midterms 40%, Final 40%
Each solution: correctness 80%, conciseness 20%

Difficulty: This is designed to be an introductory course in Probability and Statistics. Some familiarity with Calculus is assumed.

Content

The course will consist of two main subjects: Probability and Statistics, which divide the material into two somewhat unequal parts. We will emphasize probabilistic methods. No computer aid will be used or required.

Home assignments will be due each Friday after class at 10:55 (except holidays). They can be also handed in on Thursday in room 2-108 (UMO). Collaboration is encouraged but solutions must be written individually. No late home works are accepted except for extraordinary circumstances.
