Math 134 section 2: Dynamical systems

Textbook: 

   S. Strogatz, Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos, second edition.


Other references:

   J. D. Crawford, Introduction to Bifurcation Theory.  


Prerequisites: Mathematics 33B


Material:  We will study dynamical systems of differential equations and their qualitative behaviors, both in one and two dimensions. Examples in physical applications will be discussed. We cover roughly Chapter 1-8 of the textbook.


 


Grades: It will be the maximum of either


   Homework 10%, final 50%, midterm 40%

  or

   Homework 15%, final 70%, midterm 15%.


In order to pass this class, you must take the final exam.


Homework: There will be weekly homework assignments. The lowest homework set score, except homework 5, will be dropped.  

  

  Homeworks will be assigned online below, one week prior to the due date. 

  

   Homeworks will be due at the beginning of Fridays’ class, beginning April 7th.

      

   No late homework will be accepted.

  

Midterms: There will be one in-class midterm: 

                                 

                   Friday, May 5th.


  No books, notes or calculators are allowed. There will be no make-up exam.



Final Exam:  June 12th, 3-6pm. Comprehensive.
