Math 134 section 2: Dynamical systems

S. Strogatz, Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos, second edition.

J. D. Crawford, Introduction to Bifurcation Theory.
Prerequisites: Mathematics 33B
Material: We will study dynamical systems of differential equations and their qualitative behaviors, both in one and two dimensions. Examples in physical applications will be discussed. We cover roughly Chapter 1-8 of the textbook.
Grades: It will be the maximum of either
✫ Homework 10%, final 50%, midterm 40%
or
✫ Homework 15%, final 70%, midterm 15%.
In order to pass this class, you must take the final exam.
Homework: There will be weekly homework assignments. The lowest homework set score, except homework 5, will be dropped.
✫ Homeworks will be assigned online below, one week prior to the due date.
✫ Homeworks will be due at the beginning of Fridays’ class, beginning April 7th.
No late homework will be accepted.
Midterms: There will be one in-class midterm:
Friday, May 5th.
No books, notes or calculators are allowed. There will be no make-up exam.
Final Exam: June 12th, 3-6pm. Comprehensive.
