Fall Quarter Schedule of Events

Welcome to the Bruin Actuarial Society! Our first meeting will be Thursday, 9/26 at 6 PM PDT. During the meeting, we will discuss the actuarial career, BAS events, relevant majors and minors, actuarial exams, and more. We will conclude by presenting key information about the upcoming events and deadlines. After the presentation, there will be time to ask questions and speak with the officers. We look forward to meeting everyone!

We will be hosting preparation workshops for the Career Fair on 9/30 and 10/1. The one on 9/30 will be done virtually via Zoom, while the one on 10/1 will be done in person in MS 6627. Members only need to attend the workshop on one of the two dates. During the workshops, we will give resume tips, talk about how to speak to firm representatives, discuss dress codes, and more! Attendance to either the 9/30 virtual workshop or the in-person workshop on 10/1 is required for Career Fair attendees.

After the prep workshop, we will offer an opportunity for our members to learn how to create an effective resume in preparation for the Career Fair. We will be going over general tips, overall structure, and a guide to solid bullet points. You may also bring your resume for critique.

This workshop will be hosted by Ziruo Wang, FCAS, MAAA from Aon. Ziruo will cover a general actuarial career introduction, interview preparation, and how to prepare for a job interview using ChatGPT! This workshop will be extremely helpful with recruitment season coming up, and we strongly recommend attending to prepare for the Career Fair.

We will be hosting a Coaching Actuaries Campus Club Welcome and Tutorial Workshop on Thursday, October 17th, at 6PM in MS 6627. If you're studying or (planning to study) for an actuarial exam, this is a great opportunity to learn more about Coaching Actuaries as an actuarial exam preparation tool and the various study resources they have to offer. We will be going over the different Coaching Actuaries study products, how to use Adapt, and club benefits and discounts. We will be raffling away a free 45-day Learn+Practice subscription to one lucky member and giving out free Coaching Actuaries stickers!

In this workshop, we will go over what an actuary does, exam structure, resources available at UCLA for this career, and much more. We encourage freshmen and first-year transfers to attend, but this workshop is also helpful to other students who are interested in this profession.

If you are an international student at UCLA who is interested in becoming an actuary, come to our annual International Student Workshop! You will gain insights on how to search for internships and/or full-time opportunities in the U.S. or overseas as an international student, on top of current legislation regarding CPT, OPT, and H-1B Visas. Note: this workshop will happen shortly after the First-Year workshop.

Join us for the Introduction to Insurance Workshop to gain confidence with essential insurance concepts and industry jargon. These insights will equip you to engage effectively in conversations with firm representatives, actuaries, and interviewers—enabling you to discuss the industry business models and insurance concepts with ease. We highly recommend all Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors to attend this workshop and it will strengthen your understanding of insurance fundamentals. Topics include: essential insurance terminology (written premiums, earned vs unearned premiums, in-force policies, lapse rates), basics of pricing and reserving (fundamental insurance equation, claims cycle, adverse selection risk), and an overview of common insurance products in Life, Health, P&C and Retirement lines of business.

If you want to start learning how to use Excel as more than a way to store data, this is the workshop for you! Excel is the most widely used program for data analysis in the actuarial industry, so proficiency in Excel will prepare you to succeed in the workforce. Having basic Excel skills will also be helpful for our Winter Case Competition in January, which is a valuable opportunity to gain relevant experience and industry knowledge that will give you a leg up in recruiting. This workshop will cover basic functions including IF, COUNTIF, SUMIF, INDEX, MATCH, and Tables. If you are interested in attending Basic Excel Workshop, please RSVP here. Do you want to push your Excel skills to the next level? Join us for our Intermediate Excel Workshop! We will quickly recap some of the basic functions learnt last week and then go over advanced functionalities such as PivotTable, Solver, and Data Visualization. These skills will be necessary for being a strong actuarial candidate for recruiters. You will be using the functions and formulas learned in this workshop during most actuarial internships and case competitions. Make sure to download the Solver add-on in Excel beforehand!

We will be hosting our annual Mentorship Mixer this Thursday, 11/14 from 6:00 - 7:00 PM PDT in the Grad Student Lounge. There will be pizza and drinks provided. We highly recommend this event to underclassmen and transfers, as it is a great way to connect with officers and experienced seniors. Your mentor will serve as a resource for you to learn more about the steps you should be taking as a UCLA student to pursue an actuarial career, whether you have questions about studying for exams, recruiting for internships, or taking UCLA courses.
