Our Coaching Actuaries Preferred Club Welcome and Tutorial Workshop will be happening Thursday, April 10. If you're studying (or planning to study) for an actuarial exam, this is a great opportunity to learn more about Coaching Actuaries as an actuarial exam preparation tool and explore the various study resources they offer. During the workshop, we’ll cover the different Coaching Actuaries study products, how to use Adapt, and club benefits and discounts. Here is a comprehensive overview to this program:
What is it? The BAS Spring Recruitment Bootcamp 2025 is a selective, application-based workshop series that is aimed at providing focused-support for our members in their professional development.
Why this program? This program is designed to prepare Sophomores and Juniors for the Fall 2025 Actuarial Recruitment Season. However, everyone is allowed and encouraged to apply.
How is it structured? This pilot program is limited to a small cohort of 10–15 students so that we can provide individualized support, actionable feedback, and a high-touch learning environment.
What are the workshops? The workshop aims to focus on technical skills (Excel, SQL, Casing) as well as soft skills (Interviewing, Resume, Pathways). The tentative workshops are scheduled as follows:
  1. April 17: Resume & Interview Workshop
  2. April 22: Excel Workshop (with R/SQL preview)
  3. April 24: SQL Hands-On Workshop
  4. April 29: Pacific Life Case Competition Walkthrough
  5. May 1: Actuarial Exams & Career Pathways
When is it held? Tentatively 5 workshops spread across April 17 to May 1. Workshops will be held from 6PM-7:30PM. All sessions are only held in-person. No sessions will be held virtually or recorded since we structure this program prioritizing interactions between members and Officers.

Winter Quarter Schedule of Events

We are excited to present a workshop covering applications of R in case competitions. Among the items on the agenda are basic syntax, data types and variables, basic operations, data structures, basic data wrangling techniques, and simple data visualizations. We aim to highlight key skills that may be relevant to this particular case competition.

We highly recommend this event for all interested participants who are unfamiliar with R.

We will first provide guidance on what steps to take to get the most out of your case competition experience; we'll cover suggestions on efficient ways to split up the work amongst your group and briefly dissect some examples from past competitions. We will then discuss the requirements and judging criteria for this year's case. At the end of this event, you will receive an opportunity to form teams (if you do not already have one) and sign up for the competition.

At least one member from each team must be present in order to successfully register for the Case Competition. Attendance will be taken; please use ONE consistent email address when filling out the forms.

Each of the four finalist teams will be presenting to a panel of actuaries from various firms, followed by a Q&A session. After the winner is announced, there will be a chance to network with the attending firm representatives.

This is a great chance to see how the finalists approached the case and what solutions they proposed. Participants who did not progress to the final round can still benefit by speaking with firm representatives about their experience participating in the Case Competition, as this is relevant actuarial experience that many recruiters will ask you about when you are looking for internships or full-time positions.

We are excited to present our first ever Applied Excel in Actuarial Mathematics for Life Contingent Risk Workshop! You are the pilot audience for this workshop, which could potentially develop into an intensive professional development course for those who want to prepare early for recruitment in September/October.

Below is some information about the workshop:
  1. This workshop closely follows the concepts introduced in the UCLA MATH 178A Class. These include: Selected & Ultimate Survival Models, Expected Present Value, Annual Premium etc.
  2. The Excel assignments are expected to be doable for those with some familiarity with Excel. Among the Excel functions that you will use are: XLOOKUP, Defined Names, etc.
  3. We will first introduce some Actuarial concepts (as a recap for those who have taken the class; and as a primer for those who have not) before we work through the Excel workbook.

Excel is the most widely used program for data analysis in the actuarial industry, so proficiency in Excel will prepare you to succeed in the workforce. Having basic Excel skills will also be helpful for our Winter Case Competition in January, which is a valuable opportunity to gain relevant experience and industry knowledge that will give you a leg up in recruiting.
