Topics: Calculus, which is a useful technique for dealing with changing quantities. The goal is to introduce the concepts involved in calculus, and to show how to apply these concepts to various problems. See the Mathematics Department's description of this course, and their course outline.

Prerequisites: Course 3A with a grade of C- or better.

Textbook: Calculus for Biology and Medicine, third edition, by Claudia Neuhauser

Honors contracts: Sorry, I will not do honors contracts this quarter.

Homework : Homework problems will be assigned at each (or nearly each) lecture (Monday, Wednesday, Friday). You hand out the Homework to the TA in your discussion section, according to the following rule: At a Tuesday discussion section, all problems assigned through the previous Friday are due; at a Thursday discussion section, all problems assigned through the previous Monday are due. Please work the problems as they are assigned (try not to wait until the night before they are due). Homework counts for 10% of the grade (see  Grading).  LATE HOMEWORK IS NOT ACCEPTED, but the HW grade will be based on the top 80% best scores of the problems assigned.  Problems for exams will be very much in the style of HW problems, so I strongly encourage you to do ALL HW problems assigned.

Tests: There will be a first midterm exam on Friday, October 18, during our regular class 8-8:50am that day. The  second midterm will be on Friday, November 8th,  during our regular class as well. The final exam is on Wednesday December 11, 11:30am-2:30pm (exam code 1), in our usual classroom Franz 1178. Mark these dates on your calendar now. Please bring your photo ID to the tests.

Grading: Each of the two midterms is worth 25 % of the grade. The final exam is worth 40 %. The HW score is based on the top 80%  best scores per problem, and is worth 10 % of the grade.
