Short Bio

Guido Montúfar is Professor of Mathematics and Statistics & Data Science at UCLA and leads the Mathematical Machine Learning group at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig. His research develops mathematical foundations for understanding modern learning systems, with an emphasis on the geometry and algebra of neural network representations, optimization and implicit bias, and verification and reliable AI. His work connects ideas from geometry, algebra, probability, optimization, and statistics to characterize what neural networks can represent, how learning dynamics select among possible solutions, and how properties of learned systems can be verified. He is a recipient of an ERC Starting Grant, an NSF CAREER Award, and a Sloan Research Fellowship, and leads research programs supported by NSF, DARPA, and the DFG. He also leads the NSF Research Training Group in Statistics and Data Theory at UCLA and has played an active role in developing the mathematical machine learning community through research programs, workshops, and the Mathematical Machine Learning Seminar jointly organized by MPI MiS and UCLA.
