UCLA Math professor, Andrea Bertozzi, was recently honored with the degree of Doctor of Human Letters *honoris* *causa* from Claremont Graduate University. Professor Bertozzi is the inaugural holder of the Betsy Wood Knapp Chair for Innovation and Creativity, and director of applied mathematics at UCLA. She received her AB in Mathematics in 1978, followed by an MA in Mathematics in 1988, and a PhD in Mathematics in 1991, all from Princeton University. Prior to joining UCLA in 2003, Bertozzi was the L.E. Dickson Instructor and NSF Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Chicago from 1991-1995, the Maria Geoppert-Mayer Distignuished Scholar at Argonne National Laboratory from 1995-6, and was on the faculty at Duke University for nine years.

Bob was born on May 25, 1922 in Soroki, Bessarabia, Romania (present day Soroca, Moldavia) and came to settle in Canada with his parents when he was still very young. He was a student of Richard Brauer in Toronto, receiving his Ph. D in 1948 before joining UCLA in 1948 where he stayed till the end. . .
