Geoffrey Mess, mathematics professor at UCLA, died on August 8th, 2014. Mess battled illness for much of the past 20 years.  The illness stole away his research productivity first, and then succeeded in stealing him from us.  He will be remembered and missed.

UCLA professor Terence Tao has been selected by the Royal Society to receive the 2014 Royal Medal for physical sciences for his “many deep and varied contributions to mathematics."

One UCLA professor, along with undergraduate and graduate alumni received honors on July 8 at the annual meeting of the the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in Chicago.  Each year the society awards three prizes for oustanding papers published in all SIAM journals in the past three years.
