**UCLA Math ranks 4th!**

#### "The Department of Mathematics at the University of California offers different mathematics specializations to cater to students’ interests. Mathematicians who are strictly interested in theory may choose the mathematics major, while engineering and industrial enthusiasts follow applied mathematics.

There are many questions about the gaps between consecutive prime numbers which are not completely solved, even after decades of effort. For instance, the twin prime conjecture, which asserts that the gap between primes can equal 2 infinitely often, remains open.

UCLA Mathematics Department rose to **9th** place worldwide in the 2014 Shanghai Academic Rating of World Universities in Mathematics. UCLA continues to rank **5th** place in the US in Mathematics.

**Damek Davis**, a fifth year PhD student in the UCLA Department of Mathematics, was selected as the winner of the 2014 INFORMS Optimization Society Student Paper Prize for his paper “Convergence rate analysis of several splitting schemes,” (2014), with UCLA Math Professor **Wotao Yin**.
