UCLA Math has risen to 6th according to the summer 2017 global rankings in mathematics by the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). UCLA Math succeeded University of Oxford, King Abdulaziz University and University of California, Berkeley since its last ranking in 2015, where UCLA Math was placed at eighth.
The Society of Actuaries (SOA) is a professional organization that helps develop actuarial leaders around the world. The SOA has designated UCLA's actuarial program as a UCAP-Advanced Curriculum (UCAP-AC) for 2017-2018. The UCAP listing serves as a resource for students looking for university/college actuarial programs.
On Sunday, June 18th, three-time UCLA Math alumnus Demetri Brizolis returned to campus to give the commencement keynote address to over 400 graduates, their families and friends. UCLA PhD student Geoffrey Iyer has been awarded a Chateaubriand Fellowship, totalling over $10,000, from the French Office of Science and Technology, to carry out his final year of the PhD studies in Grenoble France in the GIPSA Lab supervised by Prof. Jocelyn Chanussot, starting in Sept 2017. Professor Andrea Bertozzi has been appointed as a Math+X Investigator by the Simons Foundation, which recognizes research collaboration between mathematics and the California NanoSystems Institute. As an Investigator, Bertozzi will receive significant research support of $1.5 million for an initial period of five years beginning July 1, 2017.
