- Instructor: Thomas M. Liggett
- Office hours: MW 2:30-3:30 in MS 7919
- Teaching Assistants (office hours): Silas Richelson (Tu 1-3 in MS 3969), Erik Lewis (Tu 9-10 in MS 3955) and Stedman Wilson (Th 3-4 in MS 6147)
- Covel tutor: Kit Curtius
- Student Math Center: M-Th 9-3 starting Wed. Jan 7
- Text: Single Variable Calculus by Jon Rogawski
- Prerequisite: Mathematics Diagnostic Test, or Mathematics 1.
- For more information: See Handout
- Midterms: There will be two midterms and a final exam.
There are no makeup exams.
You should bring
picture ID to all exams.
- BOTH MIDTERMS WILL BE IN LAKRETZ 110,which is located near Life Sciences.
- Calculators will not be permitted on exams.
- The First Midterm will be on Friday, January 30, and will cover sections
2.1-2.6 and 3.1-3.8. On the midterm, you will be asked to prove one of the
following: (a) Theorem 2 on page 79, (b) Theorem 1 on page 120, (c) Theorem 1 on page 142.
- I will have a review session 3:30-4:50 in MS4000 on Thursday, Jan. 29.
- Solutions to first midterm
- The Second midterm will be on Friday, February 27, and will cover
sections 3.9, 4.1-4.6, 4.8 and 5.1-5.2. You should be able to state all the theorems in these
sections, and will be asked to prove one of the following: Theorem 2 on page 184, Theorem 4 on
page 186, or the Corollary on page 192.
- I will have a review session 3:00-4:30 in LaKretz 110 on Wed. Feb. 25.
- Solutions to second midterm
- The Final Exam will be at 11:30 on Wednesday, March 18.
The final exam will cover the entire quarter:
the sections covered on the two midterms + sections 5.3-5.6 and 6.1-6.4. For the final
exam, you should be able to state the following theorems, and prove the last three:
IVT (page 84), MVT for derivatives (page 192), FTC I (page 273),
FTC II (page 278), and MVT for integrals (page 315). On the final exam, for half of the
problems, we will only look at the answer -- there will be no partial credit. The other
half will be graded normally.
- THE FINAL EXAM WILL BE IN TWO DIFFERENT ROOMS. If your last name begins with
a letter from A to H, you will take it in MS 4000. If your last name begins with a
letter from I to Z, you will take it in Humanities A51.
- I will have a review session 3:00-4:30 in PAB 1425 on Tues. Mar 17.
- Solutions to final exam
Homework
Notes: 1. The dates below are those on which the assignments are made.
They will not be turned in or graded. See the handout for more information,
especially about the quizzes that will be graded instead.
2. There are many more problems in this text than
I can assign. A good idea is to do a few (as many
as you have time for) unassigned problems as well. This is
particularly useful for the odd numbered problems, since there
are answers in the back that you can check your work against.
3. I will use the MyUCLA Gradebook program for this course.
For quizzes, you will now see "unknown" in the
date due column.
