Putnam rules for UCLA
- The competition is only open to regularly enrolled undergrad
students who have not yet received their bachelor's degree. No student
may participate more than 4 times. The results will be emailed, and
all grades are final.
- The Putnam is in four sessions, Session A 08:00-09:30, Session B 09:45-11:15, Session C 13:00-14:30, and Session D
14:45-16:15.
- You must pre-register for Putnam at the MAA website and obtain a
PIN. You will need this PIN for all the sessions.
- Bring your UCLA ID.
- Pencils, erasers, pens with blue and black ink are permitted. I strongly recommend using pens since the solutions
will be scanned and emailed. (Pencils scan very poorly, and you will not receive any points if the graders cannot read your
solutions.)
- Write only on one side of the paper since the scanning will be done one-sided.
- Books, calculators, rulers, compasses, computers are not permitted
in the exam room.
- Cellphones, smart watches, etc, must be switched off and stowed
away for the duration of the exam. (Since not all rooms at UCLA have
clocks, consider wearing a non-electronic wristwatch to keep track of
time.)
- I, as a proctor, will not provide any clarification in the exam. You
must work independently during the exam.
- Justify the solutions to each problem. When working on a problem,
do not refer to your work on a different problem.
- You are allowed to sit for some sessions and not for others (for instance, if some sessions conflict with your
Finals).
- For each session, you are not allowed to arrive late, and you are not allowed to leave the room for any reason. If you do
want to leave the room in the middle of the session, you must submit your solutions before leaving.
- You will be provided white sheets for solutions and yellow sheets for scratch work.
- When submitting solutions, hand in the work you wish to have
graded in order of the problem numbers, and with the pages for each
solution in their proper order. Make certain to confirm your PIN, the
problem number, and the page number for that solution. In front of
each solution that you wish to submit for grading, place the
appropriate cover sheet. Do not include scratch papers,
blank papers, and the problem list---trash them; if you have not
made any progress on a problem, do not include any solutions for that
problem.
- Each of the solution sheets that you are submitting must be
clearly labeled as follows. On the top of each page,
write
"PIN X, Problem Y, Page Z of W"
where X is your PIN, Y is the
problem number (A1-A3, B1-B3, C1-C3, or D1-D3), W is the total number of pages
(excluding the cover page) in your solution for this problem, and Z
is the page number (Z is between 1 and W). However, do not write your
name or university name anywhere on the solution sheets. Do not write anything on the cover sheets.
- Here is a specific example. Say your PIN is 123456, and in Session B, you solved or made progress on problems B1, and B3,
and wrote the solutions (one-sided) in 2 and 3
pages, respectively. Then when submitting the Session B solutions, include only the following pages, in this exact order.
- The cover page of Problem B1.
- The two pages of solution of B1, labeled "PIN 123456, Problem B1, Page 1 of 2" and "PIN 123456, Problem B1, Page 2 of 2".
- The cover page of Problem B3.
- The three pages of solution of B3, labeled "PIN 123456, Problem B3, Page 1 of 3" and "PIN 123456, Problem B3, Page 2 of
3" and "PIN 123456, Problem B3, Page 3 of 3".
