Class information.

Textbook: Stewart, Calculus, 5th edition
Location:  Lectures, MWF 1-2 Haines 39;   quizzes and midterms, Thursdays 5:00, Moore 100 and MS 4000A .
Material: We will cover (with some omissions) Sections 6.5, 7.1--7.7,  8.1--8.4, 8.7, 8.8, 9.1--9.2 and 12.1--12.10, 12.12.
Homework: homework is due weekly on Fridays, except for Nov. 9 and Nov. 23,  because of holidays.  Graded homework will be returned to you in your discussion section (on Tuesday or Thursday).  You may work together on the homework, but you must write up your own solutions.  The Student Math Center, MS  3974,  is open Mondays to Thursdays 9--3.  It is a good place to work together  on homework.  Late homework will not be accepted.
Exams: There will be two midterm exams and a final exam. The midterms will be on Thursday Oct. 27 and Thursday Nov. 17. The final exam will be on Sunday, Dec. 11.  You will automatically get a failing grade if you do not come to the final examination.  If you have a conflict with the time of the final exam, you should discuss it with me within the first two weeks of class.  There will be no make up exams
Quiz: there will be a quiz on Thursdays 5-5:30 in Moore 100 every week, except when we have midterms or when Thursday is a holiday.   The quizzes will be multiple choice and you are required to bring a Scantron card (Scantron No. 882) to each quiz.  Graded quizzes will be returned to you in the discussion section. There will be no make-up quizzes.
IMPORTANT: BRING A PHOTO ID CARD TO EVERY QUIZ AND MIDTERM AND TO THE FINAL.
Grading: Your final class grade will be based on your performance on the midterms, the quizzes, homework, and the final exam.  Your two lowest homework scores (of 10)   and one lowest quiz score (of 7) will be dropped when computing the final class grade.  Your final class score will be the greater of:
20% Midterm 1, 20% Midterm 2, 10% homework, 20% quiz; 30% final,
or
20% of the best of two midterms, 10% homework, 20% quiz, 50% final.
In particular, if you you miss a midterm, your final will have a correspondingly higher weight in the computation of your final class grade.
Streaming video: Through a pilot project of the Office of Instructionial Development, all lectures will be recorded and made available on the web. Clicking on the material for a specific lecture will launch the video of that lecture. For more details, including software requirements, you may visit the bruincast web page for this course.
