Class Syllabus

Textbook: C. Neuhauser, Calculus for Biology and Medicine, 2nd edition.

Course material: we'll cover, with some omissions, chapters 2-5 of the book.

Prerequisite: successful completion of Mathematics Diagnostic Test (score of 36 or better) or Math 1 with a grade of C- or better.

Homework: The homework is due every Friday in class. Graded homework will be returned to you in your section on Tuesday or Thursday. The homework is an essential part of the class. Each week, several chosen problems will be graded, and in addition a certain score will be assigned for completeness. Two lowest homework scores will be dropped in the computation of your final grade. Late homework will not be accepted and there will be no make-up homework.

Midterms: There will be two midterms on January 30th and TBA during the regular class hours. Please make sure you have no time conflicts. There will be no make-up exams. However, if you miss a midterm, the missed midterm will not count and the final exam will count for more.

Quizzes: There will be several quizzes throughout the quarter in the dicussion section. Quiz topics and dates will be announced in advance. One lowest quiz score will be dropped in the computation of your grade. There will be no make-up quizzes.

Grading: Your final class score will be computed as the maximum of the following:

10% Homework + 10% Quizzes + 25% (best of two Midterms) + 55% Final
or
10% Homework + 10% Quizzes + 20% Midterm 1 + 20% Midterm 2 + 40% Final
