The purpose of Math 1 is to give you a strong preparation for taking calculus. You will study functions--Linear, Quadratic, Polynomial,Rational, Logarithmic and Trigonometric . You are welcome to use your calculator on homework assignments but we will not be using them on the exams. I have used both the TI 84 and the TI 89, so if you bring one to office hours, I will know how it works. However, a (graphing) calculator is not required for the course and will never be used on our exams.
Precalculus : A Prelude to Calculus by Sheldon Axler ---available in your bookstore or you can have an electronic version on your netbook or Ipad or Nook or whatever gadget you carry around with you. This is an excellent book, with many good explanations . READ the appropriate section(s) in your book before you tackle the homework. The student solution manual is also in the book.
This book is in our bookstore as a paperback, or as a three hole punched pack of pages that you can put in your own binder. Both of these come with the Wiley Registration Code which you will need because WileyPlus is a required part of the course . Buy the paperback OR the three hole punched version but NOT both. If you bought your book used and do not have a registration code, you can buy one online. Follow the direction in the WileyPlus link above .

Your class meets 4 days per week. You meet with me on Monday , Wednesday and Friday. You will also meet with your Teaching Assistant (TA) on either Tuesday or Thursday. You will find these meetings very valuable . Here you will have the chance, in smaller groups , to discuss questions with your TA or to hear your TA clarify a lecture topic that you may not have understood the first time. Do not miss these meetings !
Do not miss my class. Everyday , I will do something new , important and vital to your understanding of Mathematics.
Homework will be collected each Friday. One objective of this class is to show you how to write clear solutions to math problems. Use your solutions in the text book to get an idea how to completely answer a question. WRITE , DRAW and explain.
Note: Late homework will not be accepted. At the end of the quarter, I will "drop" your 2 lowest HW scores before I calculate your homework grade . Some homework assignments will be submitted using WileyPlus
You will be submitting a weekly quiz online using WileyPlus.
Note: Late quizzes will not be allowed. At the end of the quarter, I will "drop" your 1 lowest quiz score before I calculate your quiz grade.
Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated in any form.
Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to :
1. Copying homework solutions.
2. Cheating on any of the exams, including using material not allowed to be used, using cheat sheets during the exam time
and of course 'copying' from another student's paper.
You will have two exams during the quarter : Exam 1 will be on Wednesday October 19 from 5-7 pm and and Exam 2 will be on Tuesday November 22. Mark these dates on your calendar now and plan to be here. The dates are not negotiable. You will have a final exam on Saturday December 3 from 11:30 am - 2:30 pm. At the end of the quarter, I will use the following scheme to assign your class grade.
Exam 1 | 20% |
Exam 2 | 20% |
Quizes | 10% |
Homework | 10% |
Final Exam | 40% |
There will be no make up midterm exams . If you miss a midterm exam for any reason, I will use this scheme below to assign your final grade .
Your one Exam grade | 20% |
Quizzes | 10% |
Homework | 10% |
Final Exam | 60% |
If you take both exams, but the 2nd scheme gives you a higher grade, then I will use that higher grade .
The final exam must be taken in order for a student to receive a passing grade. Final examination days and times are scheduled by the Registrar's Office. The day and the time cannot be changed.
