Text: Linear Algebra, Fourth Edition, by Friedberg, Insel, and Spence

Enrollment: Enrollment is restricted to those who qualify. For example 115A or 33AH is required. PTE's (permission to enroll numbers) will be given out the first days of the class. The class will start on Friday, October 1.


Material: Lectures will be based on material from Chapter 2 (Section 2.6, 2.7), Chapter 5 (Sections 5.2 and 5.4), and Chapters 6 and 7. The student is expected to be familiar with the material from Chapters 1 through 5, Sections 6.1, and 6.2, except 1.7, 2.6, 2.7, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4. (Such material is to be found in Math 33A, 33AH and/or 115A).

Grading. One midterm: 25 percent
Homework: 25 percent
Final: 50 percent

Final Exam: Friday, December 17 11:30a.m. - 2:30p.m.

There will be no makeup exams for the course. If the midterm or a homework is missed for emergency reasons, see Professor White for a revised grading policy.

Homework will be assigned once a week, usually on Wednesday, and will be due on the following Wednesday. No late homework will be accepted.

Syllabus: The course will start a review of 115A, then Sections 2.6, 2.7, 5.2 and 5.4, and then proceed through Chapters 6 and most, though not all, of Chapter 7. The material in Section 6.1 and 6.2 should probably be familiar to those who have taken 115A or 33AH. Weekly material and homework for the course will be listed under virtual office hours on the web site for the course. These two items will be updated weekly as the course progresses..
