Announcements for Midterm Exam

The midterm will be Friday, May 7, as previously announced, in our usual lecture room.



Conditions:

50 minutes long, 50 points

Closed book.

Calculators permitted, except those that can do ``modular arithmetic''



Format of exam:

Five problems, each for 10 points. One will consist of several short-answer parts. No bluebooks needed.



Coverage:

Lectures through Friday, April 30.

Homework through Assignment #4.

Text Ch.  2; Ch. 3A-C; Ch. 4A-C1; Ch. 5; Ch. 6; Ch. 9A-C and some of 9E; Ch. 8.

In general: All topics mentioned in lectures and homework problems.

Theorems whose proofs you should know especially: $ \sqrt 2$ is irrational; there are infinitely many primes; which elements of Z$ /m$Z are units; Fermat's little theorem.



Review:

In class as part of lecture on Wednesday, May 5.



Office Hours for midterm week: Monday 12:30-1:30 as usual; Wednesday 1:00-2:00; Thursday 11:00-12:00 and 1:30-2:30.
