Majors, Minors & Specializations

  • Mathematics major is designed for students who are interested in the theory of mathematics. Pure Mathematicians often pursue Master's degree and Ph.D's in Mathematics in order to prepare for a career in research or university level teaching.
  • Applied Mathematics major is ideal for students who are interested in mathematics used in the physical, life and social sciences, and engineering, as well as practical applications in society, including business, finance, medicine and the internet.
  • Data Theory major is designed to train students, through theory and practice, in the mathematica, statistical, and computational principles of data science. Top graduates will be prepared for graduate studies in a field related to data science or an initial technical position in the field with leadership potential. In collaboration with the Statistics Department, it is a capstone major with a data-based project during the senior year. 
  • Financial Actuarial Mathematics major is designed for students interested in financial mathematics and its applications.  Graduates typically go on to MFE/MBA programs, the actuarial field, banking and/or and business.
  • Mathematics of Computation major is designed for individuals who are interested in the mathematical theory and the applications of computing. These majors often seek employment in areas similar to the applied mathematicians.
  • Mathematics for Teaching is a major designed for students who have a substantial interest in teaching mathematics at the secondary level.
  • Mathematics/Applied Science major is intended for those students who are interested in applications of mathematics to other areas. Students majoring in Mathematics/Applied Science often pursue careers in medical professions, professional programs, or graduate programs in business or law.
  • Mathematics/Economics B.S. degree program is designed to give students a solid foundation in both mathematics and economics, stressing those areas of mathematics and statistics that are most relevant to economics and the parts of economics that emphasize the use of mathematics and statistics. It is ideal for students who may wish to complete a higher degree in economics.

***UPDATE (08/25/2020):  Due to a schedule conflict with orientation, Tuesday, September 1st virtual advising is from 1:30-3PM PST and Wenesday, Sepetember 2nd virtual advising is from 9-11AM PST.

Due to the large volume of emails, virtual advising via Zoom will be available on Tuesdays from 9-11AM PST and Wednesdays 1:30-3PM PST.  (Note that we are only available for live meetings during this time and is subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances.)  If there are any cancellations or this continues, the status will be posted on the department’s website below.
