Call for Putnam Exam Participants

Wednesday, October 4, 2017

Every year, a team of UCLA students participates in the William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition. The competition consists of a three-hour morning session and a three-hour afternoon session. The problems in the competition are elementary, yet difficult, and require more originality and ingenuity than ordinary math exam problems.  Consequently, an extensive knowledge of upper division mathematics is not required.  We encourage you to consider participating in this year's competition, which will be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017.

There will be one introductory meeting about the Putnam on Friday, September 29, 4:30-6:00pm in WG Young 2200.

Also, we will have a practice exam on Tuesday, October 3, 4:00-7:00pm in TBD.

Students who are interested in preparing for the Putnam exam are encouraged to sign up for Math 100 (Problem Solving).

You can find out more information about the competition on the Mathematics Department website (http://www.math.ucla.edu/ugrad/putnam-competition). If you have any detailed questions (i.e., subject tested, qualification, etc.), you can contact Professor Ciprian Manolescu (cm@math.ucla.edu).

The deadline to sign up is Wednesday, October 4, 2017. To sign up follow this link: goo.gl/eTJc3f

Please note, last year's best scorer received a $1,000 prize for their high performance!
