Tuesday, September 5, 2017

On behalf of Brennan Spiegel, MD, MSHS,  Assistant Dean, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

and Director of Health Services Research, Cedars-Sinai Health System, I wanted to make you aware of a unique new Master’s Program.

Below is an overview with a FAQ section, along with Dr. Spiegel’s contact information.

Cedars-Sinai Master’s Degree Program in Health Delivery Science

Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles is the largest medical center in the Western United States and a member of the US News & World Report National Best Hospital Honor Roll. Our established graduate school will expand next fall with a new Master’s Degree in Health Delivery Science (MHDS) program (website) designed to train tomorrow’s healthcare leaders.

About the Program

The Cedars-Sinai MHDS program offers a unique curriculum that prepares graduates for a successful career in emerging healthcare fields, including digital health science, mobile health, wearable biosensor technology, social media epidemiology, health technology assessment, big data analytics, performance improvement and health economics. Students are embedded within teams operating in Cedars-Sinai — the largest hospital in the Western United States. A structured capstone project affords unparalleled opportunities to gain applied skills that reinforce classroom didactics. Upon completing the program graduates are prepared to enter a wide array of employment and leadership positions.

Program Rationale

American healthcare is undergoing a striking transformation. Driven by changes in value-based healthcare financing, burgeoning information technologies, and advancements in data analytics, healthcare delivery is rapidly evolving in ways that require multidisciplinary expertise. To succeed, healthcare organizations must manage and interpret big data; learn how to implement health information technology; ensure high-quality, safe and effective care; measure and address patient values; and, ultimately, ensure all these activities are cost-effective.

Targeted Learners

The degree is for students seeking to develop foundational skills and knowledge in HDS with an aim to become leaders in healthcare organizations. The program is ideal for students who may be considering a more traditional degree in public health, yet are seeking deeper exposure to modern analytic techniques and applied skills. Or, for students contemplating an MBA, but who are interested in the business of healthcare delivery. The program is also well suited for pre-health students who seek additional experience in healthcare before starting an MD, RN, PharmD, or other clinical degree.

$25,000 for the entire 20-month degree program without additional fees (Year #1 tuition = $15,000; Year #2 = $10,000). This is lower than similar programs in California and beyond.

Admissions and Accreditation

The program is highly competitive. We will enroll up to 20 students for the class beginning in September, 2017. Admissions are rolling. Refer to this page for more information about the application process and timeline, and to this page to access the online application form. The MHDS program is part of the established Cedars-Sinai Graduate Program that is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The MHDS application was submitted to WASC in October 2016 as an update to the existing accreditation. Positive notification from WASC is expected in the first quarter of 2017. Admitted students will be informed of final WASC approval status prior to the deadline for accepting the offer of admission.
