The UCI Department of Mathematics organizes a summer Jump-Start Workshop
for its incoming graduate students as a means of facilitating their transition into
graduate school. In view of its success, the Department has decided to open it to
a limited number of undergraduates (seniors) and MS students from local colleges
who are entering - or considering applying to - a PhD program.
The Jump-start Workshop comprises two sets of lectures in Advanced Algebra and
Advanced Analysis. These sessions cover material that most graduate schools in the
US expect their incoming students to master in order to have a successful experience.
The Workshop provides a solid foundation for a seamless transition into graduate school
and offers the opportunity for a “graduate experience.” The Workshop also includes a
session about applying to graduate school.
The 2015 Jump-Start Workshop is scheduled between August 10 and September 11;
the cost is $600 for each component or $1,000 for both sessions. Space is limited to
