UCLA Mathematics Professor Alexander Merkurjev has been awarded the 2012 Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Algebra by the American Mathematical Society (AMS) for his work on the essential dimension of groups.
In November, UCLA Mathematics Professor Emeritus Mark Green was named fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general scientific society and the publisher of the journal Science. Green was among five UCLA scholars to be selected this year.

On October 31, 2011, the Los Angeles Timesfeatured new research by UCLA mathematicians that uses a mathematical algorithm to identify street gangs involved in unsolved violent crimes.
UCLA Mathematics alumnus Richard A. Tapia (BA, 1961, MA 1966, PhD 1967) was named among seven outstanding researchers as a 2011 recipient of the National Medal of Science, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on scientists and engineers.
