Linear Algebra, by Friedberg, Insel, and Spence, with a supplement on “Languages and Proofs, and Induction” (custom edition for UCLA). We will cover most of the core material from chapters 1, 2, 5, and 6.

Grading:

Your final average in this class will be computed based on the following weighting scheme:

Homework:15%
Midterm:35%
Final exam:50%

Homework:

Homework will usually be assigned each Monday and due in class on the following Monday. The assignments will be announced in class and posted on my web page. Graded homework will be returned in section. Your score on each homework assignment will be based on a few randomly chosen problems, as well as overall completion of the assignment. Late homework will not be accepted, but your one lowest homework score will be dropped.

Exams:

During the exams, you may not use notes, calculators, cell phones, or anything other than paper and pencil. There will be no make-ups for missed midterms. According to UCLA policy, you must take the final exam in order to pass the class. Make-ups for the final exam are permitted only under exceptional circumstances, as outlined in the UCLA student handbook. Please bring a photo ID to every exam. The exams are tentatively scheduled for the following dates:

Midterm:Tuesday, August 24 (midterm, solutions)
Final exam:Friday, September 10 in Geology 4660 (exam, solutions)
