Introduction

The Summer School will take place from August 28 - September 2, 2005 at Best Western in Avalon, Catalina Island. Catalina Island is about an hour by boat from Los Angeles.

The typical participant will be a graduate student or postdoc and not an expert on the topic, but interested in jointly learning a new subject.

Participants will be required to prepare a 2h lecture on some topic in advance, and submit a 4-6 page summary of their topic prior to the summer school, at the latest by August 15. The topics are listed here.

The Summer School is one of a series of Summer Schools funded by NSF grants.

Sunday August 28 will be the arrival day. >From Monday to Friday the participants will give the lectures that they have prepared in advance. Departure will be after lunch on Friday September 2.

Registration

Space is limited to 11 participants.

The NSF grants provide funding for accommodation. A contribution towards travelling expenses may be available upon request. The ferry fare is covered.

If you would like to participate, please send an informal email to thiele@math.ucla.edu by June 01, 2005. Please describe your professional status (graduate student, postdoc, etc) your area of research and your motivations for participating in the summer school.

Please also indicate your preference for a topic on which to prepare a lecture (applicable as soon as list of topics is available). The organizers are happy to answer questions on the assigned topics anytime.
