Class Syllabus

Textbook: O. Bretscher, Linear Algebra, 5th Ed., Prentice Hall.

Course material: We'll cover (with some omissions) Chapters 1--3 and 5--8.

Prerequisite: Math 32A with a grade of C- or better.

Homework and Quizzes: The homework will be assigned weekly, but will not be collected. There will be a weekly 10-minute quiz in your discussion section, based on the homework. Graded quizzes will be returned to you in your discussion section. Quizzes may only be taken in the same discussion section that you are enrolled in. If you attempt to take a quiz in a discussion section that meets at a different time than the one you are enrolled in, your quiz will not be graded and you will receive a score of zero. There will be no make-up quizzes. However, two lowest quiz scores will be dropped when computing the class grade.

Midterms: There will be two midterms, tenatively on Monday, Oct. 17th and Friday, Nov. 4th during regular class hours. Please make sure you have no time conflicts. There will be no make-up exams. However, if you miss a midterm, the missed midterm will not count but the final exam will count for more.

Final Exam: The final exam will take place on Monday Dec 5th, 3pm-6pm. Do not take this class if you have a time conflict for the final. The final exam will be comprehensive and will cover all of the class material.

Grading: Your final class score will be computed as the maximum of the following:

15% Quizzes + 30% (best of two Midterms) + 55% Final
or
15% Quizzes + 25% Midterm 1 + 25% Midterm 2 + 35% Final
The lowest two quiz grades will be dropped in this computation.

Grading complaints: Quiz and exam scores will be generally made available to you on MyUCLA before the graded work is returned to you. Please verify in a timely manner that your scores are correctly recorded on MyUCLA. If you believe a problem on a quiz or an exam has been graded incorrectly, or that your score was not correctly recorded, you must bring this to the attention of the instructor (not the TA) within 14 calendar days of the date of the assignment in question, and before the date of the final exam. Grading or record-keeping complaints not initiated within this period of time will not be considered.
