Material

This is second course in abstract linear algebra.
We shall study topics selected from quotient spaces, direct sums, dual spaces, invariant factors and elementary divisors, (Smith normal, rational and Jordan) canonical forms, spectral theory, singular values, and if time bilinear forms, and multilinear algebra. Although we shall review material from Math 115A, you are expected to have seen this material and proofs of the various theorems. The course will be theoretical with computation and applications secondary.

One Takehome Midterm and one Final (Subject to change):

Final: 3:00am-6:00am Tuesday 19 March 2019.

Posted on web due in discussion section, returned in discussion section.

To learn the material you must do homework.

Expect to be told to redo (*) homework problems that you do incorrectly to get credit.

Lecture:

MWF 2:00 in MS 5147

Most of lecture time will deal with proving theorems and giving examples.

You are welcome to ask questions during the lecture and my office hours.

Quiz Section:

The TA will go over material done in lecture, homework, and additional related material.

 Grading:

midterm 25%, homework 25%, final 50%
