TA

Geoffrey Iyer: Discussion Section TR 1 in MS 5117

Book:

Hoffman and Kunz: Linear Algebra, 2nd Ed.

Material

This is an honors introductory course in abstract linear algebra.
The course will concentrate on learning how to understand mathematical concepts.
You will be expected to learn how to state and prove results in linear algebra.
Computation will be secondary for the most part.
The course should provide a valuable introduction to mathematics and mathematical thought.
The transition from computation to mathematics is not easy, but is very rewarding.

Exams:

Two In-Class Midterms, one Take Home Midterm, and one Final:

Midterm 1:TBA
Midterm 2: TBA
Take Home Midterm (will replace a homework assignment but you will have more time to finish it.)

Homework is returned in Discussion Section.

To learn the material you must do homework.

You may be told to redo some homework problems that you do incorrectly.

Lecture:

MWF 2:00 in MS 6229

Most of lecture time will deal with proving theorems and giving examples.

You are welcome to ask questions during the lecture and my office hours.

Quiz Section:

The TA will go over material done in lecture, homework, and additional related material.

 Grading:

Best of the following total weighted scores:

final plus homework (final = 70%)
final plus one in-class midterm and homework (final = 55%)
final plus two in-class midterms and homework (final = 40%)

determines grade. Homework counts 30% of grade with counting HW 1-6, 8,9 counting 15% and HW 7 counting 15%.
