Math 32A, Lecture 1 Edwards
Classroom and Time: LS 2147, MWF 8:00 - 8:50am.

Office Hours: MWF 9:15 - 10:15am, in my office MS 6617D.
Also, questions (especially shorter ones) are welcomed right after class. The Bomb Shelter is a convenient place for such quickies.

Important Note : First Meeting.
In place of the discussion sections on the first Thursday, September 30, I will hold an (informal) introductory class in our regular classroom, LS 2147 at 8am. All students, even those whose discussion sections are scheduled for Tuesdays, are welcome and indeed encouraged to come. (But attendance is neither essential nor required.)

Text: Calculus, by James Stewart, THIRD edition. Note that the (new) fourth edition is being used this quarter for Math 31A and 31B (whereas 32A and 32B will use the third edition, since so many students taking these classes already have it). Unfortunately there are sufficiently many differences between the third and fourth editions in the relevant chapters that it would be impractical for a student to try to use the fourth edition instead of the third edition in our class.

The Student Solutions Manual (associated with the Stewart text) can be useful, but is neither explicitly recommended nor required.

Course Outline. We will cover the bulk of Chapters 9, 11 and 12, guided (but not constrained) by the suggested syllabus, (E.g. I find that dot and cross products merit more time, leaving less e.g. for Kepler's laws.)

Grading. Your final course grade will be based solely upon your performance on the exams and homework, in the following proportions: 22.5% for each of the two "midterm hour" in-class exams (really 50 minutes each), 45% for the Final (3 hour) Exam, and 10% for homework.

Exams. The two in-class exams are (currently) scheduled for Friday October 29 and Friday November 19. The Final is scheduled (by the registrar!) for Tuesday December 14, 8-11am.

Homework. Generally due weekly on Fridays (beginning with October 8), or on Wednesdays of exam weeks (and perhaps the 10th week). Assignments will be handed out in class a week (at least, but generally no more than that) in advance, with leftover copies retrievable outside my office (MS 6617D) anytime subsequently. Your homework grade will be based upon these (nine, likely) assignments, after dropping your lowest homework score.

Further course details will be provided when instruction gets underway
