The purpose of Math 1 is to give you a strong preparation for taking calculus. You will study functions--Linear, Quadratic, Polynomial,Rational, Logarithmic and Trigonometric . We will be using the TI -83 or TI- 84 in this class.

Text

Precalculus : A Prelude to Calculus by Sheldon Axler ---available at this direct site which saves you money. Or you can get the book from your UCLA bookstore. This is an excellent book, with many good explanations . READ the appropriate section(s) in your book before you tackle the homework. The student solution manual is in the book.

Meetings

Your class meets 3 days per week. You meet with me on Monday ,Tuesday and Wednesday. (KNSY PV 1200B--Please see the UCLA main web site to figure out where this is. ) You will also meet with your Teaching Assistant (TA) on Tuesday and Thursday. Both section 1A and !Bmeet in MS 5147 at noon for section A and at 1 pm for section B. Attendance at these meetings are ruqaquired. Here you will have the chance, in smaller groups , to discuss questions with your TA or to hear your TA clarify a lecture topic that you may not have understood the first time. You will often take short quizzes during this time.

Do not miss my class. Everyday , I will do something new , important and vital to your understanding of Mathematics.
