The (Ramanujan-Serre) theta operator has many important applications in
the theory of modular forms (mod p): Serre and Swinnerton-Dyer's work on
congruences, Gross' work on companion forms, Edixhoven's refinement of
Serre's conjecture on modularity of mod p Galois representations, etc.  In
this talk I will describe the construction of a theta operator for Siegel
modular forms (mod p) and discuss potential applications to the study of
higher-dimensional Galois representations.
