For any help on the homework, please come to the instructor's or the TA's office hours. The Student Math Center is also a good option (see below). Mathematical questions are difficult to answer by email. For any other sort of question or to schedule an appointment, feel free to use email.

Student Math Center:

The Student Math Center (SMC) is located in MS 3974 and offers group study and tutorials for lower division mathematics courses. See http://www.math.ucla.edu/ugrad/smc.shtml.

Homework:

Homework will be assigned weekly and posted on the website. The problems will help you to learn the material and it is important that you understand how to do all of them. Homework is due on Friday at the end of class unless otherwise noted on the website. All chapter and problem numbers refer to the textbook, and may not be the same as in previous editions of the text. No late homework will be accepted and no make up assignments will be given, but the lowest two assignments will be dropped when calculating your final homework score. Only a selection of problems will be graded in detail from each assignment: this will make up about half of the homework score. The other half of the points will be awarded based on the completeness of the assignment. You may work together, but everyone is expected to write up their solutions individually. Homework must be stapled and clearly labeled with your name, ID, and section number on the front page. Do not use tape or paperclips or any other novel method to bind your homework.

Mid Term Exams:

There will be two midterms on Monday, 17 October and Wednesday, 9 November during the regular class hour. Please make sure you have no time conflicts and bring your ID card to all exams. For both the midterms and the final exams no books, notes, smartphones or calculators will be allowed. There will be no make-up exams, no exceptions.

Final Exam:

The final is from 8:00 AM - 11:00 AM on Friday 9 December 2011 (Exam Code: 01). You must take and score higher than a 0 on the final in order to pass the class, no exceptions.

Grading:

Because there will be no makeup exams given, your grade will be computed as the maximum of two grading schemes:

Grading Scheme I
Grading Scheme II
20%  Homework
20%  Homework
20% Midterm I
30% Highest of Midterm I and II
20% Midterm II

40% Final
50% Final

The final raw scores may still be curved at the end of the course.

Academic conduct:

Your work and conduct in this course are governed by the UCLA student conduct code and can be found here. This code is designed to promote high standards of academic honesty and integrity as well as fairness. In particular, all work that you submit in this course must be your original work. Any cases of suspected academic misconduct will be addressed as defined by the conduct code.
