Textbook: S.H. Friedberg, A.J. Insel, and L.E. Spence, Linear Algebra, Prentice Hall 2003.

Requisite: course Math 33A: Linear Algebra and Applications

Course Description: Abstract vector spaces, linear transformations, and matrices; determinants; inner product spaces; eigenvector theory.
MATHEMATICAL PROOFS will be emphasized in the class, in the homework assignments and in the written examinations.

Homework Policy: The homework will be assigned every week and will be collected during lecture on Friday. No late homework will be accepted. The lowest homework grade will be dropped and will not count for the final grade.
You are encouraged to solve as many problems as you can from the textbook, and not only those from the homework assignment.

Examinations: Two midterm exams and one final exam.

Midterm #1: Monday, October 22, time 1-1.50pm. Topics covered for the first midterm: Sections 1.1-1.6, and 2.1.

Midterm #2: Monday, November 19, time 1-1.50pm. Sections covered for the 2nd midterm: 2.1-2.5, 4.4, 5.1-5.2 (from Section 5.2, only up to page 272).


Final Exam (Code: 06) - Monday, December 10, 2007, 11:30am-2:30pm.
- All sections are covered for the final exam. However, more questions will be given from Sections 6.1-6.4
- 1 or 2 additional problems for extra credit will be given at the final exam, for those that would like to improve their midterm(s).
Friday December 7 will be a review session in class. Additional office hours and/or review sessions will be announced soon.

The examinations are closed-book and closed-note. No exams at a time other than the designated ones will be allowed (exceptions for illness with document proof, or emergency).

Grading Policy: Hw 20%, Each midterm 20%, Final 40%

Reading: Sections 1.1, 1.2 and Appendix C.

HW #2: due on Friday, October 12
Reading: Sections 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5, including all solved examples.

Section 1.4: 3(f), 4(f), 5(f), 11, 13;
Section 1.5: 2(a), 2(f), 3, 9, 17, 18, 20;
