Course Description: This is a course in multivariable calculus. The topics will include integration in multiple variables, vector fields, line integrals, surface parameterization, surface integrals, Green's theorem, Stokes' theorem, and the divergence theorem. This is an honors course, so relative to a "normal" 32B course, there will be a much stronger emphasis on proofs and mathematical rigor. This will be reflected in the lectures, homework assignments, quizzes, midterms, and final exam.

Textbook: Multivariable Mathematics by Ricahrd E. Williamson and Hale F. Trotter

Grading Scheme: Your score will be based on one of two grading schemes. Whichever grading scheme give you a higher score will be used.

Grading Scheme 1
    Homework     10%
Quizzes 10%
Midterm 1 20%
Midterm 2 20%
Final Exam 40%
       Grading Scheme 2
    Homework     10%
Quizzes 10%
Highest Midterm 30%
Final Exam 50%

No matter which grading scheme is used, the homework assignment with the lowest score will be dropped, and the quiz with the lowest score will be dropped.

Homework: Homework will be collected on Fridays. There will be homework assignments essentially every week, although if a particular Friday is near an exam date there may not be homework for that week. No late homework will be accepted. You are encouraged to work with one another on the homework, but you must write up your own solution. You must not merely copy work from another student or from the internet, a book, or anywhere else. Such copying constitutes cheating.

Quizzes: Quizzes will be administered in lecture each Friday. There will be no makeup quizzes. Please remember that the lowest quiz score will be dropped. One of the reasons we do this is to account for the fact that you might miss a lecture due to unfortunate circumstances. You are not allowed to use anything during the quizzes other than writing utensils. No notes, paper, calculators, or electronics of any kind.

Midterm and Final Exams: The first midterm will cover all material up to (roughly) the exam date. The second midterm will cover all material between (roughly) the first exam date and the second exam date. I say "roughly" because I may want to place the cutoff dates a few days before the exams so that you aren't being tested on material you haven't had time to digest. The final exam will be comprehensive, but will focus more on the material after the second midterm. Anything covered in lecture or in the relevant sections of the textbook may show up on an exam. The (tentative) exam dates are as follows:
    Midterm 1     Monday, January 28, 9:00-9:50 AM
Midterm 2 Monday, February 25, 9:00-9:50 AM
Final Exam Monday, March 18, 11:30 AM - 2:30 PM
There are no makeup exams. As with the quizzes, you are not allowed to use anything during the exams other than writing utensils.

Regrading: If you think some of your work needs to be regraded (homework, quizzes, exams), then you must request a regrade from me within two weeks of the date that the particular assignment was returned to the class. This means that if you didn't come to class on the day that it was returned, and you picked it up late, the deadline for requesting a regrade is not changed.

Cheating: Cheating is a terrible thing. Don't do it! I will report any cheating to the appropriate academic authorities, and the consequences can in some instances be very severe.
