Summer REU project 2011 - fluid dynamics with level set

During the summer of 2010, I mentored an REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) entitled fluid dynamics with level set. The goal of the project was to create a new interface capturing method using particle and level set to apply fluid dynamics. We studied level set method and particle level set method first then implemented modified particle method capturing the interface. And this project initiated current research topic, second order level set repair scheme with particles on the interface. The students working on this project were: Trevor Caldwell (Harvey Mudd College), Noah Duncan (Harvey Mudd College) (not in the picture), Tengyuan Liang(Peking University) and Shirley Zheng(Cornell University). They worked really hard and had a fantastic final presentation, which can be found here with final report.

COMAP 2012 MCM(Mathematical Contest in Modeling & Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling for Undergraduates )

As one of faculty advisor, I recruited three groups of undergraduate students and organized and trained groups with previous contest problems.
• MCM: The Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) is a unique international contest for undergraduate students. The MCM is designed to stimulate and improve problem-solving and writing skills. Students participate as team members rather than as individuals, creating an environment for sharing knowledge and skills. Your institution may take part in the MCM effort by encouraging a member of your department to serve as a faculty advisor. Advisors help organize the teams, distribute contest materials, and return solution papers to COMAP. MCM is a contest where teams of undergraduates use mathematical modeling to present their solutions to real world problems. MCM 2012: February 9 - 13, 2012..
