Jed Yang::Qual

Here are (partial) solutions to the UCLA Algebra Qualifying Exams. I took (and passed) the Fall 2009 qual. At the time of preparation, 20 old quals were available. Each one has 9 (relevant) questions, 3 each in groups, rings, and fields. I typed up about 146 of the 180 questions. I solved some more but was too lazy to type them up.

The problem statements may have been altered (albeit slightly). In particular, phrases such as ``justify your answer'' have been dropped as it should be common practice to do so. Other modifications include typesetting (I like $\alpha$ as roots more than $\theta$ ) and some clarifications. Hints are also often dropped. The (known) errors in the problem statements are listed at the beginning of each file.

Please note that the curriculum has changed. It is not advisable to only study these three types of questions.
