Math 33B Lecture 2, Winter 2006 :

Differential Equations

  • Instructor: Inwon Kim
  • Lecture
  • Discussion Section:
  • General Course Outline: Math 33B Outline

  • Class Information: First day handout

  • List of Homework Assigments

  • Corrections/Addendum to the lectures:

Week 1: An ODE is Linear if it is linear in y(the function)-variable, NOT in x(the underlying)-variable. Any linear ODE can be written in the form of (6) on p4 of the textbook. On monday's lecture I was wrong to say that the sum of any two solutions of linear ODE is again a solution of the same ODE - The statement is only true for homogeneous equation, that is, when g(x) given in (6) is zero.

Week 2: Note that OFFICE HOURS ARE CHANGED TO MW 2:30-4pm.

  • Midterm #1 from Fall 2005.

  • Additional review problemsfor Midterm I

02/07: Solutions to midterm I is now available.

  • REVIEW PROBLEMS FOR MIDTERM II HAS BEEN CORRECTED.
  • Review problems for Midterm II

    (Corrected version: 3/2)

  • As announced last week, the sections to be covered are 4.4-4.6, 5.1-5.2, 6.1-6.2 and a portion of 4.7(the case of real roots) which was covered in class on monday. There will be no modelling questions.
  • There are several (not very important, however possibly confusing) typos in the book; (8.2) Example 2: Above (7) in the final form of A+3I, its (2,3) entry should be 0, not 1. Below (7), A+4I has its (3,3) entry 0 in its first matrix form, this should be 1. Below (8) A+5I should change to A-5I. Example 3: Again A+5I should change to A-5I.
  • 03/10: Solutions to midterm II is now available.

  • 03/17: There was an error in the solution to problem 1,midterm II. The file has been now corrected.
  • Office hours for the final week: 3/20 Mon and 3/22 Wed, 4-5:30 pm.
