Coverage: All what we covered in the quarter: Sections 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5, 7.6, 7.7, 7.8, 7.9, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4, 8.5

Go over again and again theorems, problems and examples covered in the class, in the homeworks, in the two midterm exams and in the answer keys:[pdf](first midterm coverage); [pdf](second midterm coverage); [pdf](the rest). The last lecture on Friday (March 14) is reserved for review. In the lecture, some solutions from the answer keys will be explained in more details. 70% of the problems are similar to those in homeworks, examples in the text and proofs in the text and the lectures given.

Point of emphasis:

• Definition of groups;
• Symmetric groups (order, odd and even permutations, conjugation);
• Normal subgroups, product of groups (criterion for G = N x H for two normal subgroups N and H);
• Finite abelian groups;
• Use of Sylow theorems (determination of groups of a given order)

Structure of the exam:

• 5 light computational questions (total 100 points);
• True-False style questions (100 points total);
• Yes-No questions (100 points) to tell a given set with an operation a group or not;
• one proof (100 points): the use of the Sylow theorems.
• one counting problem (more demanding: 100 points).

Review Session:

One class meeting will be reserved for review (The last lecture of the quarter). The answer keys should be useful for you to prepare for the exam.

Extra Office Hours:

Monday March 17th from 2:00 pm to 2:50 pm (just before the exam) but the official office hour on the same day is canceled.

Remarks on grading

The full mark is 500 points (50% of the final grade). The scores of two midterm exams (each 200 points), the final exam (500 points) and the percentage of your homework scores (100 points) being added, the full mark of the final grade is 1000.

Texts and Notes:

• Students are not allowed to open text book and notes from the lectures while taking the exam.
• Students are not allowed to bring 3x5 cards.
• Students are encouraged to bring his/her calculater (a simple one is enough).
