First Test

Mathematics 61

• Classes from September 28 through October 22.
• The nine sections of the textbook from which we have homework problems:
  • Mathematical Induction.   Strong Form of Induction and the Well-Ordering Property.
  • Sets.   Functions.   Sequences and Strings.
  • Relations.   Equivalence Relations.   Matrices of Relations.
  • Analysis of Algorithms.
• Problem Set I, Problem Set II, and Problem Set III (answers are posted on the due date).
• The supplementary webpage on Growth Rates.   (The supplementary webpage on Preorder Relations is not required.)

The test will be mostly like the homework.   Like the homework, the test can ask both for calculations and for proofs.   (We want you to be able to reason with these concepts.)   The test can also ask for definitions.

Ground rules: Paper will be provided.   Bring pencil and eraser.   No calculators.   Closed book.   Please bring your photo ID to the tests.

Note that on Monday, I have my usual office hours.   And on Tuesday (October 23), the TA has extra office hours, 1 - 3 p.m.   In addition, I will hold a session for questions and problems on Tuesday (October 23), 5:30 - 6:30 p.m., in Franz 2258A.   And of course our VOH site is always available.

The maximum possible score was 100 (the problems ranged from 15 to 25 points each).   Grades are posted on my.ucla.
