Coverage: The exam covers everything, from the first day to the last day. Everything means everything: classes (the lectures are webcast), all 113 of the homework problems, the textbook, and the six online supplements. For the textbook, it means Chapter 12 (except for section 12.7.3 on linear regression). Here are the six online supplements:
The webpages for the first midterm and the second midterm have links to solutions for the midterms and the practice midterms. The final exam should of course have some small emphasis on the recent material (after the second midterm), for which it is both midterm and final.Ground rules: Paper will be provided. Bring pen or pencil and an eraser. Please bring your photo ID to the test. No calculators (an answer of pi/ln 2 should be left like that). But an answer like P(9,3)/4! should be worked out. Closed book, except that you may bring two 3 x 5 note cards, if you wish (with writing on both sides). Better tape the two cards together, so you don't drop one. After the exam, keep the note cards with your other treasured possessions. A copy of the table on page 919 will be provided.
The format will be similar to the midterms, but about twice as long. The test problems will be mostly like the homework. ("Mostly" means mostly, and "like" means that I think similar methods are used.) Answers should be supported by the work shown.
How to make three practice final exams: Take the two practice midterms, the two actual midterms, and the recent homework problems. Put them together. Now you have an exam that is three times too long.
