Mathematics 197 Procedure

for Mathematics 114C

Math 114C has been canceled for winter 2009.   So as a substitute, interested students can petition to enroll in a reading course, Math 197, with me this quarter.   The reading course will be based the same course notes that would have been used for Math 114C.   Here is general departmental information on Math 197 courses.   Note that there are some restrictions.

To enroll, you will need to go to my.ucla and find the right page for contact courses (listed under "Features").   There is a petition form to fill in and print out.   The form will then need appropriate signatures.

The form will ask you various questions (year and term, 197, Mathematics Department, my supervision, and so forth).   Here are suggested answers for possible harder questions that might appear.

"Please provide a short description of the course of study ...."

Imitate Mathematics 114C (not offered this year), on Computability Theory.   Meet weekly with the instructor, at a time TBA.

"Please provide an outline of the proposed course of study ...."

Study Chapters 1 -7 of the Math 114C course notes.   These chapters deal with mathematical formalizations of the effective computability concept, classification of decidable and undecidable sets, connections to logic, and polynomial-time computability.

"Please indicate the tangible evidence you will provide ...."

Written solutions to selected exercises.   These solutions will be presented on a weekly basis.
