First Test

Mathematics 131A, Lecture 3

Our first midterm will be on Wednesday, February 1. It will cover everything we do up to that time. For the book, that means everything up to page 40. For the homework, it means Problem Sets I, II, and III. For the webpage giving an example of a non-Archimedian ordered field, it is enough to know that such fields exist, and that they will have infinitely large elements and infinitesimal elements. For the webpage on the Schroeder-Bernstein theorem, it is enough to know what the theorem says, just in case it turns out to be applicable somewhere. And everyone should know about Cantor's theorem.

The ground rules: closed book; no calculators; paper is provided.

I will hold a "last chance" office hour on Tuesday, January 31, 5:30-7:00 pm. (This is in addition to the usual office hours, and in addition to the "virtual office hours" website.)

Sample problem forms are posted.

Grades are now posted on my.ucla. And solutions are posted.
