Mathematics 197 Procedure

for Mathematics 114B

As you know, Math 114B is not being offered this year. So as a substitute, interested students can enroll in a reading course, Math 197, with me next quarter. The reading course will be based primarily on Sections 3.3 - 3.7 of the book.

The procedure starts with going to my.ucla, and looking under "MyUCLA Features" for "Contract Courses." Select Mathematics 197 (individual studies). You will need to choose between letter grading and P/NP. You will need to choose a number of units. The nine-digit ID number is 262-882-201.

Then the system will ask you various questions. Here are suggested answers.

"Please provide a short description of the course of study ...."

Imitate Mathematics 114B (not offered this year), on Logic and Computability, with an emphasis on the Gödel incompleteness theorems and computability theory. Meet weekly with the instructor, at a time TBA.

"Please provide an outline of the proposed course of study ...."

Study Chapter 3 in the Mathematics 114 textbook, concentrating on Sections 3.3 - 3.7.

"Please indicate the tangible evidence you will provide ...."

Written solutions to selected exercises. These solutions will be presented on a weekly basis.
