Abstract:
Point processes are useful in all kinds of scientific research, including ecology, epidemiology, finance, seismology, medical imaging, forestry, astronomy, and many other areas. This talk will introduce point processes in a mathematical framework, and some interesting properties that have been discovered recently will be examined. Potential uses of these results in the applied sciences will also be discussed. The talk is geared toward listeners with some background in measure theory but with no knowledge of point processes.
