From Filter Banks to Wavelets

Abstract:

In this lecture, I would explain the link between wavelets and filter banks. Such connection is the key for the popularity of wavelets among the DSP (digital signal processing) and DIP (you can extrapolate the meaning) communities. Perhaps this is the optimal spot to dig deeper into the wavelet theory for most newcomers, because

  1. "digital filter" is only a fancy word for "polynomial;"
  2. "filter bank" means two or more polynomials;
  3. wavelets decomposition can be realized by filtering using an appropriately designed filter bank;
  4. multiresolution analysis is simply the iteration of the same filter bank;
  5. the filter bank structure can also shed light on the new Internet image coding scheme JPEG2000 available later this year... Come to the talk and judge my opinion!
