Periods and heights of Heegner points

In this talk, I will survey work of Waldspurger and Gross-Zagier and the recent extension on the special values of L-series for modular forms and anticyclotomic characters of finite order. I will state the results in the classic setting in the first thirty minutes, and representation theoretic statement in the middle thirty minutes, and kernel functions statement in the last thirty minutes.
