Class Syllabus:

Textbook: David Cohen, "Precalculus with Unit-Circle Trigonometry", 4th edition (UCLA bookstore offers hardcover or e-book)

Course material: We will study inequalities, properties of functions, right-triangle and unit-circle trigonometry, and special functions such as exponentials, logarithms, and trigonometry functions.  This course is designed to prepare you for taking a calculus sequence at UCLA (beginning with either 3A or 31A).

Homework: One homework assignment will be due each Wednesday in lecture, for a total of 6 assignments.  Homework will be accepted during the first five minutes of lecture only, i.e. by 9:05AM!  If you're going to be late to lecture, have a classmate turn it in for you or make special arrangements with me to turn it in early!  Homework assignments must be stapled and not excessively messy, and problem solutions must be written in the order they're assigned or otherwise clearly noted - the grader has been authorized to deduct upto 2 points on each assignment if these rules aren't followed!

Graded homework will be returned to you in discussion section the following Tuesday.  Working through the homework problems is a crucial part of learning the material, so don't be fooled by the fact that homework is only 10% of your final grade.  Your score on each assignment will be comprised of a correctness score (based on correctness of several chosen problems) and a completeness score (based on completion of the entire assignment).  No late homework or make-up homework will be accepted for any reason!
On the other hand, your lowest homework score will be dropped when your final grade is computed.

Midterms: Two midterms will be given on  Thursday, June 30 and Thursday, July 14 during discussion.  Please make sure ahead of time you have no schedule conflicts.  There will be absolutely no make-up midterms under any circumstances.  The scheme for computing your final grade is already designed to give you a break should you miss one of the midterms (see "Grading" section below).

Final Exam:  The final exam will be given on Wednesday, July 27 in lectureYou must take the final exam during this time in order to pass the class!!

Grading:  Your final grade in the class will be the maximum of the following two grading schemes:

(10% Homework)  + (25% Midterm 1) + (25% Midterm 2) + (40% Final Exam)
or
(10% Homework) + (30% Highest Midterm) + (60% Final Exam)

Grading complaints: If you believe a problem on a homework, or an exam has been graded incorrectly, or that your score was not correctly recorded, you must bring this to the attention of the instructor (via email or in person) within 14 calendar days of the due date of the assignment in question or the date of the exam in question, and before the date of the final exam.  Grading complaints not initiated within this period of time will not be considered.  Scores on homework assignments and exams will appear on MyUCLA before these items are returned to you, and it is your responsibility to verify in a timely manner that the scores appearing on MyUCLA are accurate.

Class Schedule:

The topics covered during lectures will approximately follow the general course outline located here.  The following is a rough weekly calendar:
