Syllabus

We will cover essential basics of linear algebra. See http://www.math.ucla.edu/ugrad/courses/math33a/outline.shtml for a list of covered topics and a general schedule of lectures.

Grading

You may view your scores at any time via the gradebook feature of MyUCLA. The breakdown for this class is as follows:

Homework

HW will be assigned once a week on Friday in lecture and will be due on the following Friday in lecture. The homework problems will also be listed on the course webpage which will be updated as the course progresses. No late homework will be accepted. However, your lowest homework score will be dropped from your grade. Homework must be written in a readable way. It is also appreciated if you mark your answer in some way, for instance by boxing it. All homeworks need to have the following information at the top of each page: Furthermore, while you may discuss homework problems with your classmates, the work you submit should be your own. In other words, do not copy! I take this very seriously. For more information on academic honesty in general see http://www.deanofstudents.ucla.edu/Syllabus.pdf

Exams and the Final

There will be two midterm exams that will take place during lecture hours around the fourth and the seventh weeks of class. There will be no makeup exams for the course. If a midterm is missed for emergency reasons, then the weight of the missed midterms will be added to the final. For example, if you miss a midterm (due to an emergency) the final will account for 70% of your total score. Makeups for the final are permitted only under exceptional circumstances, as outlined in the UCLA student handbook. Bring a Photo ID card to every midterm and to the final. Furthermore you may not use books, notes, calculators, mobile phones, or any outside help during either the midterms or the final. You may not collaborate with other students in any way during the exams and the final. Do not cheat. Again, see http://www.deanofstudents.ucla.edu/Syllabus.pdf for a discussion of academic honesty.

Handouts and Study Material

Here is a study guide for the first midterm with example problems to solve: Midterm 1 Study Guide
Here is a study guide for the second midterm with an example problem and some suggested problems from the text: Midterm 2 Study Guide
Here is a sample final. You should be able to do all the problems since they represent the material I intend to cover on the exam Sample Final Exam
