2012 UCLA GRE Workshop

Meetings: We will meet regularly on Tuesday and Thursday in MS 6627. We will begin the GRE workshop on Tuesday, June 26, 2012. The first week will be a Matlab tutorial given by Hayden Schaeffer. See the schedule below.

Goals of the Workshop: To review undergraduate topics for the math subject GRE and strengthen problem solving as it pertains to this test. While many of you are familiar with the material covered on the GRE test, my guess is that most have not touched first-year calculus problems for some time. I will discuss some of the more esoteric topics in greater detail.

Mechanics of the Workshop: Since most of the participants will be busy with their RIPS projects, I will not assign outside work. A majority of each meeting will be devoted to problem solving individually as well as collaboratively. There will be some lecturing on particular topics, but I will serve mainly as a facilitator. Students will be asked to present solutions at the board and to actively question me and/or other presenters.

Each meeting will be divided into two parts. The first part will be problem solving and the problems themselves will draw on all relevant subjects. The second part will focus on a particular topic (see schedule below). There will be a brief discussion of relevant theorems and definitions, and some problems that hone students skills in this particular area. The GRE requires you to know some more advanced topics, but for these topics, they test in a fairly straightforward fashion.

I will probably get some of material from here. They contain good practice problems. Practice Exams
