Syllabus and assignments:
This class is the first part of the three-quarter graduate algebra sequence, whose official course description can be found here. Part A will cover the basic theory of categories and functors, the theory of groups (in particular finite groups), and the basic theory of rings and modules (roughly, the material of chapters I through III in Lang's book).

Homework 4, due Monday November 10.
Homework 5, due Wednesday November 19.
Homework 6, due Friday December 12.
We are roughly going to follow: Serge Lang, Algebra (revised 3rd Edition), Springer 2002. However the book is not required, attending lectures and taking notes should be sufficient.
Grading: There will be 6 homework assignments, a midterm exam on Wednesday, November 5th and the final exam on Tuesday, December 16 at 3pm. The grading scheme is: The better of homework 30%, midterm 20% and final 50%; or, final 100%..
